Medicare Plans & Personal Help for Virginians Turning 65

Choosing a Medicare plan can be confusing, especially when you're trying to sort it all out on your own. We help folks across Midlothian, Chesterfield, Powhatan, and the greater Richmond area understand their Medicare options and choose coverage that actually fits their needs — face-to-face, in plain English, and without any pressure.

What Medicare Covers — & What It Doesn’t

Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital coverage) and Part B (medical coverage), but it doesn’t cover everything. Most people quickly find out they still need help with prescriptions, dental, vision, and out-of-pocket costs. That’s where other Medicare plan types come in.

Medicare Advantage Plans

(Part C)

These are all-in-one plans offered by private insurance companies. They replace Original Medicare and often include extras like dental, vision, hearing, and drug coverage. Many plans have low or even $0 premiums, but they may come with copays and provider networks. We’ll help you compare plans available in your ZIP code and make sure your doctors and prescriptions are covered.

Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare to help cover deductibles, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs. These plans don’t include drug coverage, but they offer flexibility — no networks and predictable costs. We’ll help you decide if a Medigap plan is right for you and compare options from multiple insurers.

Medicare Part D

(Prescription Drug Coverage)

If you stick with Original Medicare (or a Medigap plan), you’ll likely need a standalone Part D drug plan. We’ll review your medications and help you choose a plan that covers what you take — and help you avoid any penalties for enrolling late.

When to Enroll in Medicare

You can sign up for Medicare during a 7-month window that starts three months before the month you turn 65. If you're already getting Social Security, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Parts A and B — but you’ll still need to choose the rest. We’ll help you avoid gaps, penalties, and common mistakes.

Local Help You Can Count On

We meet with clients face-to-face across Central Virginia — not just on the phone. We’ll go over your needs, explain your choices, and help you apply for the plan that makes sense. We work with many of the major insurance carriers in Virginia and take the time to make sure you’re comfortable with your decision.

Medicare FAQs

  • Do I have to sign up for Medicare when I turn 65?

If you're already receiving Social Security, you'll be enrolled automatically in Parts A and B. If not, you’ll need to sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period — which starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after.

  • What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage & a Supplement plan?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare and often includes drug coverage and extras like dental or vision. Supplement plans (also called Medigap) work alongside Original Medicare to cover costs like deductibles and coinsurance. We'll help you compare both and decide what fits best.

  • Is there a penalty if I don’t enroll in Medicare right away?

Yes — if you delay enrolling in Part B or Part D without other qualifying coverage, you could face a monthly penalty. We’ll help you avoid those pitfalls and understand the right timeline.

  • How do I know if my doctor accepts a Medicare plan?

With Original Medicare, most doctors do. But with Medicare Advantage plans, you may need to use the plan’s network. We’ll help you check which plans include your current providers.

  • Can I change my Medicare plan later?

Yes — you can make changes each year during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7). You might also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period after certain life events. We’ll help you know when and how to make updates.
